In February 2018, after Senate confirmation, President Donald J. Trump appointed Thomas M. Griffin, Jr. as the United States Marshal for the District of South Carolina. Marshal Griffin lead a work force of more than 50 Deputy United States Marshals and administrative staff members and 100 court security officers. Marshal Griffin’s responsibilities included oversight of fugitive investigations within the district, as well as security for the judiciary. Additionally, Marshal Griffin was in charge of the overall supervision of prisoner detention management and the production of detainees at courthouses located in Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, Florence, Anderson, and Spartanburg, South Carolina. Further, Marshal Griffin’s responsibilities included the management of seized assets with an estimated value of $6.9 million. He managed an annual operating budget of $7 million for judicial security, $16 million in prisoner confinement and transportation costs, $6.1 million in contracts and task force overtime funding, and $393,000 in miscellaneous operating expenses.
United States Secret Service
From January 1997 to February 2018, Thomas M. Griffin, Jr. was employed with the United States Secret Service, and served as the Resident Agent in Charge of the Greenville (South Carolina) Resident Office from May 2010 to February 2018. Prior to reporting to Greenville, Griffin was assigned to Secret Service Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and was the Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, Liaison Division. Prior assignments in Washington D.C. included an assignment as a Staff Assistant, Liaison Division, from 2007 to 2008. Griffin was an instructor at the Secret Service training center, Beltsville, Maryland, from 2005 to 2007. He was honored to have served on President William J. Clinton and President George W. Bush’s protective details from 2000 to 2005. Griffin started his career with the Secret Service in Newark, New Jersey, where he served from 1997 to 2000.
LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT
Thomas M. Griffin, Jr. started his law enforcement career with the Richland County Sheriff’s Office in Columbia, South Carolina where he was employed from 1985 to 1996. Griffin was a Detective Sergeant in the investigative unit from 1994 to 1996. Prior to being promoted, he was an investigator in the Major Crime Unit which focused on homicides and robberies that occurred in Richland County. From 1987 to 1990, he worked in the narcotics division of the Sheriff’s Office. Griffin graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and graduated from the SC Criminal Justice Academy with a certification in Basic Law Enforcement.
